Gene D'Angelo, Executive Vice President of Product Innovation and Technology, has more than 38 years experience using computers to solve business and engineering problems. For the past 17 years, Gene has spearheaded the health care fraud detection activities at HOPS. During that time, he has been able to uncover hundreds of millions of dollars in fraudulent activities through his innovative applications of the HOPS technology for clients such as Medicare and Medicaid, Kaiser Permanente, and Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Prior to HOPS, Gene's career included 20 years in a variety of managerial and technical positions.
As an internal consultant in the Medical Fraud Branch at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, Gene was tasked with the responsibility of finding applications for artificial intelligence and other advanced analytical technologies. By identifying the challenges of having a database engine powerful enough to find suspicious patterns in hundreds of millions of claims, Gene hired HOPS and was immediately able to perform analyses that were never before feasible with other database technologies. In doing so, Gene was able to identify a fraud ring in South Florida that had perpetrated more than $150 million in Medicare fraud in less than two years.
During his tenure with Digital Equipment Corporation, Gene received the DEC 100 award of achievement every year he was eligible for it. At DEC, he was in charge of its largest account, AT&T, which generated more than $120 million in annual sales. There, Gene was able to turn around a challenging situation that had quickly burned through managers, to one that became a long-term success with excellent customer feedback and outstanding reviews each year.
At AT&T, Gene was successful in solving some major problems in absenteeism and inventory control, quickly becoming the youngest person at the location in Buffalo, New York, to ever be promoted into the first level of management. As a Section Chief, he supervised more than 50 factory workers and used his engineering skills to solve materials and product allocation challenges.
Gene's experience also includes working with NCR Corporation, in charge of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) minicomputer business in Florida, as well as working several years as a private consultant to information technology companies in startup or turnaround situations.
An avid swimmer, Gene continues to participate in the Master's Swimming program, competing on a regional, state and national level. Gene is also a human rights and political activist, participating in campaigns against discriminatory ballot initiatives and serving as a media monitor for GLAAD.
Gene received a B.A. in both Biology and Chemistry, an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and an M.B.A. in Finance, all from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He also completed course work for a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The Industrial Engineering curriculums emphasized advanced analytical technologies such as operations research, management science and artificial intelligence.
